Yaesu FT-2980R 80 W Heavy-Duty 144 MHz FM Transceiver for Mobile and Base Stations
The Yaesu FT-2980R is an 80 W heavy-duty 144 MHz FM transceiver for mobile and base operation. It delivers 80 W of RF output without a cooling fan. Product Overview
Four selectable power levels are provided: 80/30/10/5 W. The FT-2980R needs no cooling fan, even at the full 80 W setting. The chosen power level can be stored into memory, so operators can conserve power while working strong local repeaters.
The memory system provides a total of 221 memory channels. That figure covers 200 regular memories and ten pairs of band-limit memories. One instant-recall Home channel is also provided, and it can be reserved for a frequently used frequency. Every memory can store repeater shift information, CTCSS or DCS data and the power output level. Scan skip status and an Alpha-Numeric label are also stored with the channel. A label may use up to six letters, characters or numbers.
CTCSS and DCS encode and decode circuits are built in, so no optional tone board is needed. Tone data may be stored independently in each memory channel. A Split Tone mode covers systems that use CTCSS and DCS separately on the repeater uplink and downlink.
The receiver front end uses Yaesu’s Advanced Track Tuning RF input filtering. Yaesu states that this affords outstanding protection from intermodulation distortion. The internal speaker produces 3 W of audio for noisy environments. The U.S. version adds a special 10-channel Weather Band memory bank for quick access to NOAA weather broadcasts. The radio can emit an alarm tone when the 1050 Hz Severe Weather alert tone is transmitted. With Weather Alert enabled it scans the ten Weather memories and stops only on that tone.
One-touch WIRES Internet Linking Access removes the need for extra linking hardware. The large 6-digit backlit LCD keeps frequencies and labels easy to read in a vehicle.
Technical Specifications
Two model designations appear in Yaesu’s documentation. The FT-2980R is the version documented by the English operating manual EH039N111. The FT-2980E is covered by French, German, Italian and Spanish manuals. Buyers should state the destination market so that the right version and documentation are quoted.
